Hand Wheels

I was watching Pirates of the Caribbean the other day and I couldn’t help but notice the giant industrial hand wheels they kept using to move everything around. Every time they had to move something on the ship simple man power was used to hoist things from below deck. What ever happened to the time that men had to be strong to do things? Now all they have to do is press a button.
